Description

  • Blade
  • iron
  • 14.4 cm long, 36 mm wide blade, 36 mm diameter socket. 10 mm thick blade, 2 mm thick socket.
  • Iron socketed blade with straight blade head, blade has worn and needed resharpening. Socketed for straight attachment to wooden shaft, which either would have been straight, indicating a use involving a downward motion for chopping or edging, or curved in a reverse manner indicating usage as an adze. The blade is too narrow for rough, heavy work, and therefore was meant to be used for finer work. While found in an otherwise medieval context, the presence of Roman sculpture and pottery with the iron object indicates that the contents of the layer are residual, and this may be the case for this blade
  • tip worn, otherwise good, minor corrosion
  • Jacobi 1974, taf. 28, nos. 481-2.
