Description

  • 62
  • Strut, fragment
  • 3rd c. AD?
  • Densely grained white marble (Italian) with no streaking.
  • Ht. l. 4 cm max., w. 2.5 x 2 cm.
  • Irregularly broken at both ends, partially encrusted, still smooth and, where not patched with encrustation, quite clean; original high polish lost.
  • This small statuary strut fragment is octagonal in section, the facets roughly 1 cm wide.
  • The decoratively faceted character of this strut is well attested in mid-Imperial through Late Antique statuary, in the latter period very small thin struts were especially fashionable.
  • Hollinshead 2002, 134-36.
