Descrizione

  • 63
  • Costume (?) element, fragment
  • 3rd c. AD?
  • Densely grained white marble (Italian) with no streaking.
  • Ht./l. ca 4 cm max., th. 3.5 cm to 2.5 cm.
  • Broken at both ends and across attachment spur. Original surface polish well preserved, and, though partially encrusted, very clean.
  • Tiny fragment of a ribbon-like section of a larger composition, slightly convex and twisting towards an end that preserves a small attachment spur, a thin ovoid in section, broken off close to the main segment. In section, the main segment thickened towards the center and straighter edge, and thinned towards the twisted edge, on both sides rounding to a sharp contour. It is well polished on both sides.
  • It is difficult to place this detached curling element with its delicately cut spur; it most resembles a trailing ribbon or strap. It certainly demonstrated bravura marble carving.
