Description
- 21
- Tree branch, or strut, fragment
- 2nd-4th c. AD
- Densely grained white marble (Italian) with no streaking.
- Ht. ca 4 cm max., th. 3.5 cm to 2.5 cm.
- Surface worn, fairly clean; broken at both ends, and perhaps across the protruding twig or spur.
- The strut-work fragment is very slightly faceted in horizontal section.
- Recognizably an item of strutwork, it may have been a simple bar, or a piece of a vegetal element serving as a strut. The rendering compares well to the carving of the sharply faceted, rooted tree stem of the Seasons-sarcophagus fragment S 5.
- Hollinshead 2002.
