Interpretation

    • Roman wall with relationship to SSU 8011 as they were aligned on a similar orientation. Total station positioning indicates that these walls are on a similar orientation, but not in alignment to that of the staircase walls of the Casale excavated in 2007 season.

  • Roman mortar
  • Tufa: light yellowish white, small black inclusions 1-2 mm. Quite porous stone (pores 1-2 mm).
  • mortar thickness between reticulate blocks: 2 cm
  • Visible bricks fragmentary. Mid-orangish red with small black and red inclusions (crushed ceramic fragments?) approximately 1 cm.
  • light whitish blue with black (3-5 mm), purple (1-2 mm), blue (1 mm), red (1 mm) inclusions
  • only about 1.5 courses visible

  • Roman wall in fair condition consisting of reticulate masonry and brickwork (very little brick visible at edges of wall). Rubble coring with tufa fragments visible, as are flat, smooth mortar surfaces that indicate the use of bricks (for leveling courses?) which are now lost.
  • Only the top courses are evident because approximately 50 cm of earth on the western side of this wall has been excavated. Its full extent to the south is as yet unknown, and what is visible appears to have been subject to collapse. Another rubble core collapse is found abutting this wall diagonally (see plan) with a very similar whitish blue mortar. Easternmost side only visible on surface, and what is visible consists of some mortar and a few reticulate block. Similar stone and mortar to SSU 8011 with similar inclusions, although the the mortar appears slightly bluer in certain places. Obvious breakage visible in masonry and what is visible of the wall in the northern half of the trench is continuous and without the doorway apparent in 8011.
