Interpretazione

    • This stratum, due to its compactness and the smoothness of its upper surface, can be interpreted as a beaten earth pavement for a structure.

  • The stratum was individuated from the proceeding stratum because of its compactness. While the soil matrix was fine-grained, the soil broke into large clumps (.5-2 cm in length) during excavation due to its compactness. Within the soil matrix was visible small fragments of mortar (2-3 mm in diameter) distributed in low concentration throughout the stratum. Ceramic and small broken brick fragments were also found in medium concentration and distributed randomly throughout the stratum. The same could be said for the small stone fragments found in this stratum as well. The natural slope of the hill creates a slight slope from E-W and the stratum follows this slope. However, there is a uniform thickness to this stratum. This limit of this stratum was delineated with a change in the inclusions and consistency of the soil.
  • The kinds of inclusions found in the stratum were diverse, but also in low concentration.
