Description
- color, smell
- pick and trowel
- silty soil, clay, and tufa
- black and yellow
- relatively hard to touch but breaks easily with pick
- good
- man made
- burnt tufa, fragments of mortar, a couple of small fragments of fresco and marble
- a thick layer under 1249 containing tile, mortar, and burnt tufa with a very distinctive smell, intermixed with yellow clay
- edges very difficult to define; seems to underlie all of mortar spread
