  • The stratum of earth is composed of very sticky dark brown compact clay. The upper interface contains a large concentration of stone, particularly in the east side, but less than that of SU 10013. The middle interface contains a fair amount of charcoal, small stones of various sizes, and small pieces of tiles. Chunks of cocciopesto with a very smooth surface were also found in this stratum. The lower interface contains fewer inclusions although two nails were found. The clayey soil comes up in sticky clumps and appears to have reddish orange inclusions, suggesting perhaps that the soil contains a large amount of iron. The clay in the lower interface is becoming purer and lighter in color.
  • Water was found in the trench, which softened the soil and allowed for easier extraction. The stratum was not completely excavated to its base.
