- Weathering has discoloured the fragment, especially the carved face. The peaks of the raised bands, once pointed, are now soft and round. The "back" face is roughly cut with chisel marks still visible; a 4 cm inset was cut into its surface. One side of the fragment is finished to a smooth, flat surface; all other sides are roughened by breaks and chips.
- The surface of AE 556 is badly damaged and worn, making it impossible to identify the larger motif. In one corner is a single twist volute. Immediately adjacent to the volute is a curved trisected band. A bud or leaf curls from its side and a fleur-de-lis sits within the band's curve.
- The sculpted elements, if not their execution, resemble the forms preserved on a pilaster fragment from Avancorpo dell'Acropoli, Ferentino (Ramieri 1983, no. 86) and a fragment of a
- The wide, flat round eye at the center of the the volute resembles those of AE 825, AE 1049, AE 1050, AE 1061b and AE 1134.
