- The fragment is broken on three sides. Its carved face is chipped and worn. An adjacent face is roughly finished and cut by an 2 cm-deep inset. The "back" of the fragment is also roughly finished.
- The triple fascia pattern preserved on the fragment is executed in very low relief. The pattern's conceit is that the bands loop over themselves. These loops are framed by a smooth, raised band about 1.5 cm wide.
- A Tri-band tear drop twists can be seen on a fragment set into the façade of the cathedral of Anagni and at S. Maria Maggiore, Ferentino (for the latter see Ramieri 1983, nos 114 and 115). It is the dominant motif carved on all sides of a fragment culled from the Foro Romano now housed in the Museo Crypto Balbi (Stella Arena, et al. 1994, 192, IV.3.8). Tri-band twists/loops often edged the net/ basket pattern (like that seen on AE 1034b) as at Avancorpo dell'Acropoli, Ferentino (Ramieri 1983, no. 56) and a fragment housed in Rome's Museo dell'Alto Medioevo (Melucco Vaccaro and Paroli 1995, no. 31).
- Though the tear-drop loop pattern on AE 189 is unique, it should be associated with the rest of the fragments of tri-band geometrical interlace found on the site.
