- The fragment is broken on two sides. All surfaces chipped, pitted and covered with traces of mortar suggesting its reuse as construction material.
- The fragment was carved on opposing sides. There is a tri-band circle and wave pattern on one face and a braid motif on the opposite face. Both patterns are framed by smooth, raised bands.
- The same variant on AE 1051a is also preserved on a cornice from Avancorpo dell'Acropoli, Ferentino (Ramieri 1983, no. 20), a pilaster from S. Giorgio in Velabro, (Vaccaro 1974, no. 23) and one side of a well head from Murano in Venice dated to the ninth century (now housed in the V&A, London, Museum no. 54-1882, http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O107425/well-head-unknown/).
- The braid or basket pattern of AE 1051b can also be seen on AE 1034 and AE 1053, and possibly also on AE 1036a and AE 1168a. The weave on AE 1053 is more open and its tri- band strips wider (approx. 3 cm versus approx. 2.5 cm).
