Villa Magna

Interpretation

    • Part of a series of postholes aligned in the western part of the trench. The structure that might have been formed by these post holes seems to have been minor and not intended for human occupation. It's possible that the structure was for the containment of animals or similar.

    • This fill was formed in two phases. The first was when the larger inclusions would have served as supports for a possible post placed at the interior of cut US 8023. The soil accumulared with the disintegration of this post.

  • Stratum comprised of soil, stones, mortar fragments and one brick fragment. Components are placed in a sub-circular form around the boundary of the cut and are of varying dimensions (12-28 cm). The bricks are fragmentary and the stones are roughly hewn. The piece of mortar is reused and fragmentary, is bluish gray with terracotta fragments of a reddish orange color and lime visible on the surface. The larger inclusions, located near the top of this stratum were vertically oriented, although some found within the soil matrix, especially near the bottom were also placed horizontally within the stratum. The soil is fine-grained and dark in color. Ceramic sherds, tesserae, and animal bones were found in low concentration randomly distributed throughout the stratum. The charcoal was distributed in the lower two-thirds of this stratum.
  • Material supports aligned along boundary of cut 8023 vary in size and material, and imply a reuse from another source. This stratum is distributed within the form created by cut US 8023. The placement of these inclusions would have lessened the diameter of the cut in which this stratum is distributed.
