Villa Magna

Interpretation

    • the burial group: HRU 4101, 4097, 4121 and 4118 are interesting due to their orientation. 4101 and 4097 over lap each other (it seems likely that 4097 and 4121 were cut (HRU 4096 across the upper part of the left femur, HRU 4121 across the upper part of his ribcage) to put in 4101, who sits above and south of them. The fact that that spine is missing is difficult to explain unless there was another burial for which it was disturbed.

  • HRU 4096 lies along the western side of the trench, between the section edge and SU 4018. It is part of a larger burial group including HRU 4101, 4118 and 4121, which extends outside the section. The skeleton is missing much of its upper half, though one of its ribs on the left side and hand remain in situ. The skeleton is young, it is impossible to determine sex.
  • Initially, it was thought that the construction of wall SU 4018, and the earlier construction of the praefornium of the lime kiln were posterior actions to the burial of this skeleton group. When the mouth of the praefornium was excavated, it was realized that the construction of the praefornium and the wall was anterior to the burials. Given the initial assumption, HRU 4101 was excavated since he was partially exposed and would have been destroyed or lost during the excavation of SU 4018. At this time, the ankle bones of the right leg of HRU 4096, still articulated, were excavated for the same reason. Two ribs were also preserved, though these may just be loose bones within the fill and not those of HRU 4097. A number of bones were also collected in the fill of HRU 4101, SU 4100, and may also belong to HRU 4097 or HRU 4118. These are labeled "scattered bones." SU 4100 and are preserved with HRU 4101.
