Villa Magna

Interpretation

    • a large cut was made for the entire bell-casting apparatus into the hard brown yellow clay 3137 found throughout the chapel during this phase. It seems that the clay was cut and then, possibly reused to line the pit.

  • An oblong cut that extends from the south side of the chapel northwards. It cut throught the pavement system 3127, 3128, and 3131. It cuts into the layer of clay 3137 that is found throughout the chapel. In the area of the bell-casting pit it is a dark brown color veined with redish-pink lines, color that is related to the firing in this zone.
  • The veins of the clay into which the bell-casting pit was cut make it easy to empty this context by following the lines along the base and up the sides of the cut.
