Villa Magna

Interpretation

    • The ossuary pit 3112 can be seen through cut 3111 and was thought to be its fill until pavement 3127 was excavated and it was revealed that the extents of the ossuary pit were beyond that of the cut in the pavement. It seems probable that the cut was made by accident since, with the settling of the bones and earth of 3112, this fill would no longer provide support the pavement above and would make it vulnerable to breakage.

  • squarish, jagged-edged cut in the NW corner of the chapel, which goes through several layers of pavement preparation
  • SU 3111 was uncovered during the 2006 season and it is possible that there was some loss of cement around the edges, making the cut a little bit larger by the time it was fully excavated.
